The Oromo Community of Greater Houston was founded in 1991. OCGH was created in response to the needs of a rapidly growing Oromo refuge that is estimated at that time 10-20 around Houston area residents As the Oromo refugee has grown, many people have had difficulty. Community resources are attributed to Oromo peoples’ limited English speaking skills and a general lack in knowledge of what helpexists, and how to navigate what is often times a confusing maze of helping organizations and institutions.
• The purpose of the Oromo Community of Greater Houston (OCGH) is to provide integrated programs and services to assist Oromo Community in Houston to become self-sufficient, and to create vibrant, sustainable, and cohesive community while promoting Oromo social, cultural and historical values and ethics through Education.
• To facilitate the reception and resettlement of Oromo refugees and immigrants and foster their full participation in all sectors of the Houston society.
• To maintain and develop the cultural heritage of the Oromo society and to pass it onto the next generations of Oromo Americans residing in the Greater Houston.
• To promote health awareness in areas of transmitted diseases and substance abuse.
• To provide Oromo's with relevant information regarding school life, life skills, job markets and apprenticeship programs.
• To facilitate access to basic human services such as housing, health, education, skills training and employment.
